Culinary tour among Amalfi's specialties

1 giugno 2021

A trip to Costiera Amalfitana is a sensory experience that involves your whole body: from taste to smell, from hearing to sight.

Today we'd like to suggest a tour to discover the unique gastronomic specialties of the Amalfi Coast.

Admire the breathtaking landscape surrounding the Hotel Le Agavi in Positano: listen to the sound of the waves breaking on the coast and breathe in the sea breeze at the top of your lungs. Enjoy the delicious scent of food surrounding you before savoring the first bite of one of the local specialties.

Discover with us the typical cuisine of Positano in this sensory itinerary.

Gragnano and its pasta

The first stop on this Amalfi Coast tour is Gragnano, known worldwide for the high-quality pasta produced in its ancient pasta factories.

Only a few people know that the secret ingredients that make this pasta unique are the peculiar features of the territory, such as the wind, the sun, and the right amount of humidity. This is why tasting this specialty outside of Campania does not provide the same gastronomic experience.

The Ndunderi of Minori

The second destination we visit is the town of Minori, also called the "Narcissus of the Coast." Here we'll tickle the palate with a plate of Ndunderi, a type of pasta similar to gnocchi, considered by Unesco one of the most ancient in the world.

In Minori, you can also taste an excellent typical Amalfi dessert, the Delizia al Limone, a sponge cake filled with custard cream and covered with a delicious lemon glaze.

Anchovies of Cetara

Cetara is a picturesque fishing village worth discovering. The typical traditional dish here is the Colatura di Alici, an amber-colored liquid sauce produced by fermenting anchovies in brine.

Even in this case, to understand the origins of this specialty, which today has become an ingredient of gourmet dishes, it is necessary to go back to the Greek and Roman civilizations. The Garum, the ancestor of the Colatura, used to be a must on the Ancient Rome tables.

Colatura di Alici is today a widely spread preparation in the area. Since 2020, it has also officially obtained DOP certification.

The ricotta cheese of Tramonti

It is now time to visit Tramonti, a wonderful village nestled between the sea and the mountains.

Here you can taste a creamy ricotta fiordilatte cheese that will release milk drops from the first cut as a symbol of freshness.

The Caprese Cake

Any gastronomic itinerary cannot be complete without dessert. And what better choice in Positano if not the Caprese cake? A real treat with chocolate and almonds made without flour or yeast.

Tradition has it that this cake was born from a mistake made by chef Carmine Di Fiore who, in his excitement to prepare a dessert for three of Al Capone's friends, forgot to use flour.

The result, however, turned out to be above all expectations, and, still today, it can be tasted in any restaurant or pastry shop of the Amalfi Coast.

The limoncello liqueur

Now is the time to delight your palate with one last specialty of the Positano area. A famous liqueur made from the fruit symbol of the Amalfi Coast, the lemon. Lemons here grow as lush and yellow as the sun in every corner. That's why the traditional liqueur Limoncello is a must-have before leaving the Costiera Amalfitana.

The paternity of this drink has always been disputed between Sorrento, Amalfi, and Capri. For this reason, within a few kilometers, it is possible to find it in three varieties made from three different types of lemon. Sfusato di Amalfi, Ovale di Sorrento, and Femminiello di Capri: enjoy all three of them and discover which one best suits your palate.

A dive into deepest blue water.
And the sky a hair’s breath away.
