A tour among Campania's wines to taste in the fall

4th October 2021

The Amalfi Coast is a destination that deserves to be visited and experienced at any time of the year. Autumn, in particular, is one of the most evocative moments.

Landscapes are tinged with new shades ranging from yellow to orange, temperatures begin to drop, and the sea breeze becomes more and more pungent.

In this frame, even the bunches of grapes gradually change color, beginning a ripening process that will end with the harvest. Berries of the white varieties change from green to yellow, whereas the black ones take on tones ranging from red to purple.

New wines are getting ready to be bottled to be served on the tables of diners and to accompany even the most substantial and rich in flavors dishes.

At Hotel Le Agavi in Positano, chef Luigi Tramontano, awarded with Michelin Star 2018, is studying new dishes to serve at the Restaurant La Serra. On the other hand, Maître Sommelier Nicoletta Gargiulo thoroughly chooses the most harmonic matching for each preparation.

Campania is a territory with an ancient enological tradition, and the Amalfi Coast is rightly part of this context. Here fish is the main ingredient, which is why among the excellences of the territory stand out many white wines, fresh, sapid and often having a long life.

The Traditional Whites

Among the best whites of the region we can mention Greco di Tufo, Falanghina del Sannio and Fiano di Avellino.

Greco is one of the most ancient grapes present in our country, arrived at the slopes of Vesuvius from Thessaly, and can boast the Docg certification, obtained in 2003. It can be found in eight municipalities, an area characterized by clayey-calcareous soils of volcanic origin with a subsoil rich in minerals.

Vineyards are distributed between 300 and 700 meters with different exposition and forms of farming. These differences are also found in the wines, which sometimes hide significant structures, remarkable acidity, and astringency. A type of profile that suits more red wines and leads to a wide range of culinary combinations: from fish to mozzarella cheese to rich dishes with porcini mushrooms.

The most crucial region for the production of Falanghina is the Sannio area, where are registered almost 1300 hectares of vineyards. Falanghina del Sannio DOP is produced in 5 subzones. It can be found in the still version - the most renowned one - and the straw and sparkling ones.

Falanghina is characterized by a floral and fruity bouquet, with some vegetal nuances and a dry taste when it is very young. Sometimes, it is an immediate wine in its crispness; however, it is smoother and full-bodied in some versions. It can be matched to fish dishes typical of Mediterranean cuisine.

Fiano di Avellino is cultivated and produced in 26 municipalities in the province of Avellino alone. The Docg was recognized in 2003. The registered surface of vines counts little more than 550 hectares.

There are apparent differences in altitude, exposure of soils with calcareous clay base with ashes, lapilli looser in some areas, more tenacious and compact in others. The profiles of the resulting wines are just as heterogeneous: fruity, floral, citrus, and aromatic herbs, sometimes roasted and smoked hints emerge.

Fiano is a wine suited for aging, a process that allows the emergence of even more profound and elegant notes. On the palate, it can be crisp and sapid, having more or less smoothness and persistence. It can be matched with many foods: from seafood dishes based on shellfish to more decadent and spicy dishes of the Campania's hinterland.

The excellences of the Amalfi Coast

The area of Costiera Amalfitana also has precious and inimitable wines included in the DOP Costa d'Amalfi. The latter covers 13 municipalities, including Positano, Furore, and Ravello.

Here winegrowers work on minimal areas: small strips of land torn from the curl with steep slopes. Heroic viticulture, without any doubt! The Campanian landscape is, in fact, characterized by vineyards born on loose and drained volcanic stratified soils with dolomitic-calcareous rocks.

The ampelographic base which distinguishes the white wines of the three subzones - Furore, Ravello, and Tramonti - are the early Fenile and the late Ripoli, the aromatic Ginestra and the spicy Pepella. Worth mentioning are also Falanghina and Biancolella, locally known as Biancazita and Biancaterra. These are all extraordinary wines with fruity and tropical notes, often sapid, fresh, and good taste persistence. They can be matched with bluefish and seafood.

Get ready to discover the best wines of Campania and the excellences of the Amalfi Coast. Book a stay at Le Agavi Hotel in Positano and try sublime matchings at La Serra Restaurant.
