Folklore and Traditions of the Holy Week in the Amalfi Coast

8th April 2022

The week before Easter is a deeply felt time for the inhabitants of the Amalfi Coast. Religion and folklore blend in rituals of ancient origin, attracting visitors from every corner of Italy.

These rituals are linked to the whole Campania region's beliefs and heritage. However, as often happens in Italy, every town tries to personalize them according to their local traditions. That's why we suggest you take advantage of the Easter season to visit the most charming places on the Coast.

The Capilongo family, owners of Hotel Le Agavi, are pleased to welcome you to their luxury resort in Positano. Book your stay with us and enjoy a full immersion in Holy Week on the Amalfi Coast.

The Sepulchres of Holy Thursday

In many churches of the area, you can still see the so-called Sepolcri, the altars of reposition set up in a scenographic way. These are usually opened at the end of the Holy Thursday mass so that believers can visit them between Thursday evening and Friday morning. Awe-inspiring are the ones in Minori, realized on the floor of the Basilica of Santa Trofimena: they seem real works of art.

The Via Crucis of Good Friday and the Battenti

A widespread event in the various areas of the Amalfi Coast is the procession of Good Friday. On this occasion, men dressed in long white tunics and hoods - called Battenti - stage the last moments that Christ lived on his way to the cross. During the procession, the Battenti beat their bodies with the help of scourges and nailed cork tiles in the act of devotion.

This event takes on peculiar characteristics in every town on the Amalfi Coast. In Positano, for example, it is called "Schiodazione," and it foresees that the dead Christ is deposed from the cross and carried in procession through the streets illuminated by torches, starting from the church of Santa Maria Assunta.

In Atrani, the procession starts from the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maddalena after the Mass in Coena Domini and goes towards the city of Amalfi.

Even the coastal centers of Ravello, Maiori, and Minori have their own version of the Via Crucis. In these places, the processions of the Battenti are accompanied by prayers and ancient folk songs.

Easter and Easter Monday

On Sunday morning, the inhabitants of the Coast are used to going to their local parishes for the Easter mass. After that, it's time for lunch, with tables laden with every delicacy: from sausages to baked pasta, from casatiello to the Neapolitan pastiera, all rigorously home-cooked, everyone using their own family recipes.

Even Easter Monday has its own traditions in some areas of Campania. In the commune of Sant'Anastasia, not far from Somma Vesuviana, for example, a group of people from various places walk along the roads leading to the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Arco. They are called Fujenti and are the devotees of the Virgin of the Arch. Like the Battenti, the Fujenti wear white tunics and blue cross bands. In a spirit of sacrifice, some of them choose to walk barefoot, proceed on all fours, or their knees, regardless of the weather conditions.

Witnessing these folkloristic and religious events live is always a unique experience. You'll get how important they are to local people if you watch them perform with your own eyes. That's why you should take a trip to the Amalfi Coast during Easter week and completely immerse yourself in the atmosphere that characterizes Positano and its surroundings. At Hotel Le Agavi, we are ready to welcome you to our elegant sea view rooms and suites and make sure you experience a stay that exceeds your expectations.
