Mother and Son: the cliffs flooded by History

1st May 2018

From Remmese Beach House, our private beach, you can enjoy the amazing view on the Positano bay. If you pay careful attention, between a dive and some relax on the comfortable sunbed, you will notice the traces of two cliffs rising up in the surface of the water, a few metres from our coast.

As you will discover in Positano, behind every rock there is a hidden story…we tell that of “Mother and Son”, between History and Legend.

A few distance from the Fornillo tower, once upon a time there were two cliffs called Mother, the exterior one, and Son, the smallest and nearest to the coast. In 1941, period of misfortunes linked to the Second World War, the inhabitants of Positano trusted the biggest cliff – Mother – and put beneath its feet two ceramic tiles with the image of Madonna of Positano, as hope of protection.

Moreover, the blind fury of men was just around the corner for the Amalfi Coast. In the early afternoon of February 2nd, 1943, the bloodiest year of the conflict, an English submarine, the Safari, left its hiding place along “Li Galli” Islands and attacked two Italian merchant ships. The ships, the Salemi and the Val Savoia, were travelling from Naples to Sicily; completely unprepared for the attack, they sunk a few metres from Positano. The citizens were awaked, during the evening break, from detonations and cannon shots. As usual in this area, solidarity and generosity defeated fear: all fishermen reached the sea, full of war, to rescue the sailors. Thanks to this courageous action, that day the victims were less than a ten.

Moreover, the real victim was the biggest cliff, Mother, flooded by one torpedo launched towards the Fornillo tower, seat of one rival military post. The destruction of the cliff, hanging the tiles with the image of the Madonna Assunta of Positano, was interpreted as an act of protection of the Mother for the Son, the smallest cliff. The torpedo chipped away at the greatest part of the rocks forming the biggest cliff. It is curious that the block of stone where the image of the Madonna was placed sunk but it remained unbroken. Maybe it was a sign – this too – of the protection on the people of Positano? Who knows…but it is certainly suggestive to look at that holy image on the seabed.

This is the story of Mother, but what about the cliff “Son”? Orphan of mother, it managed to survive just some years, but not many: at night, during a strong storm, the smallest cliff too sunk, in the Fifties.

Nowadays, to the inhabitants of Positano a memory between History and Legend still remains, and it echoes in the waters in front of the Remmese Beach House. Going for a walk along our private beach, you can admire them and recall their troubled vicissitudes.

A dive into deepest blue water.
And the sky a hair’s breath away.
