Spring in Sorrento: the charm of the Vallone dei Mulini

2nd March 2020

In spring, when nature awakens from the winter torpor and explodes in bright colours and scents full of life, it is very pleasant to explore, without haste, Positano and the nearby places.

Next to the fishing villages and postcard beaches of the Amalfi Coast, another stretch of coast deserves long walks with a wide-open gaze. Let's talk about the Sorrento Coast, with its pristine waters, the towns touched by brackish and the typical local flavours.

Here, among the unmissable destinations we suggest Sorrento, a marvellous city and seaside resort loved, abroad, especially by Britain travellers. And Sorrento itself hides a forgotten place, wrapped in a wild embrace of greenery: the Vallone dei Mulini

The origin of the Vallone dei Mulini

The Vallone dei Mulini, located behind Piazza Tasso in the historic centre, has dominated the city of Sorrento for centuries. The peculiarity of this valley certainly lies in its configuration, designed by a violent eruption of the Phlegraean Fields which, 35,000 years ago, covered with debris the area from Punta Scutolo to Capo di Sorrento. The catastrophe made the valley sink into the interior of the mountain, creating a huge furrow, which can be fully appreciated today from Via Fuorimura.

Over the years, a mill was built on the valley bed - part of an ancient system of five valleys crossing the Sorrento peninsula – and that’s the reason of the place’s name. The mill, originally actioned by rainwater, remained in operation until the early 1900s, also connected to a sawmill and a public laundry for the citizens.

The Vallone was for a long time a meeting place for the Sorrento people, thanks to the direct connection with Marina Piccola and the port, kingdom of fishermen and farmers. However, the golden age of the valley closed after the construction of Piazza Tasso in Sorrento. The construction of the square, in 1866, involved the channelling of the waters and the filling of the final part of the valley, causing its definitive abandonment.

The timeless charm of the Vallone

The almost total obstruction of the area created a humid microclimate which allowed the spontaneous birth of very particular plants. The lack of subsequent maintenance has encouraged the weaving of a thick plant cover, still embracing the abandoned mill. Among the most characteristic species is Phillitis Vulgaris, a rare specimen belonging to the fern family.

The show that opens up in front of you, overlooking the Vallone dei Mulini, is that of a tropical forest nourished by the soul of the mill. A suggestive and fascinating view, unexpected in the historical centre of a city like Sorrento.

The only way to reach the surprising location nowadays is a gate visible from the road that connects Piazza Sant'Antonio with the port and a small bridge peeking through the vegetation. It is not possible to cross beyond this point to access the soul of the valley, because the Vallone dei Mulini is private property and forbidden to visitors.

However, admiring this place from a distance produces a significant blow to the heart, especially in spring, when the infinite fronds turn green and come alive with harmonious chirping.

A dive into deepest blue water.
And the sky a hair’s breath away.
